Pi with the Prof

‘P with the Prof’ is a unique event at ESOF, where early-stage career delegates are offered the opportunity to meet with professors and professionals from the scientific world. In Turin it was pizza, Barcelona served tapas, Munich had pretzels, Dublin offered porridge, Copenhagen had a Danish picnic. Manchester will continue this tradition by serving a traditional British pie – or, to give it a mathematical flavour, ‘Pi with the Prof’.

The event provides a great opportunity for early-stage career researchers to pose questions and share ideas on the direction of their research, careers and future paths and to have general science discussions – all in an informal atmosphere with a leading professor in their field of interest.

The lunch will take place in the designated ‘Pi with the Prof’ area at the exhibition hall Monday through to Wednesday at two time slots of 12:00-13:00 and 13:00-14:00. More time slots may be added at a later date depending on demand.

Each ‘Prof’ is assigned a table, where there will be room for around 6-8 early-stage career researchers. The session will last for approximately 45 minutes and will allow participants to ask questions about their field of study or interests. It is intended to be an informal event and is a great opportunity to gain an insight to the experience and knowledge of some of the most accomplished people in their respective fields – and not to forget the delicious food.

In order to select your session and to register, please see the list of available professors and professionals below.

Note: in order to allow a maximum number of participants, you will not be able to sign up to more than three sessions and popular sessions will be subject to a ballot for those who have applied to that session. The Pi with the Prof event is only available to delegates who are registered as early career researchers.

Book your slot

Please complete the form below to register for sessions as part as 'Pi with the Prof'. Some sessions will be more popular than others and where a session is oversubscribed a ballot will be held for those who have applied to attend that session. We will endeavour to give you at least one of your choices of sessions should you be unsuccessful in a ballot. If people withdraw from an event for which they were drawn by ballot, another ballot will be held to find a replacement.
